| Played for Stonehaven based side Cowie Colts at Under-14 level, Laurie moved on to play for Montrose Youth at both Under-14 and Under-15 level before a break from football that lasted almost 5 years. |

After gradually getting back to fitness playing 5-a-side Laurie then trained with the Hearts charity team for a few months, making a brief substitute appearance in a friendly match against Gorgie United. Injury forced him to again sit on the sidelines but in 2007 he made his return for the team he formed with John Gray and Mark Smith - Fountainbridge FC.
Naturally a right back, Laurie played a slightly unfamiliar role at centre back at Fountainbridge to begin with. Also sometimes played as a defensive midfielder at youth level.
